Testing Guide

Belt tests are a celebration of hard work — a chance to show what you’ve learned in front of your instructors, classmates and family.

Are you ready to test?

  • You’ve met the minimum time at your current rank.
  • You attend class regularly (instructor’s discretion).
  • You know every form and technique required for your next rank — not just the newest ones.
  • Your instructor has approved you to test.

Test day

Fee

$20 per test, any rank. Please pay your instructor before testing.

What to wear

A clean white uniform and your current belt. Remove jewelry and tie back long hair.

Bring

Water, any required sparring gear, your weapon (if testing on a weapons form) and your family to cheer!

What you’ll be asked to do

Expect to perform your forms, step-sparring, self-defense technicals, free-sparring and a board break, plus a short interview. Higher ranks add weapons forms, pressure points, timed surprise attacks and multiple-opponent sparring.

Black belt candidates

  • Submit your black belt application to your head instructor at least 3 months before your requested test date, fully completed with all signatures.
  • Develop and memorize your original free form at least 3 months before testing.
  • Write a black belt paper on any subject related to the martial arts — read some past essays for inspiration.
  • Requests to test early must include a written statement explaining why.

✏️ To do: Add the next test date(s), the testing location, and a link to the black belt application form (upload the PDF/Word file to the Media Library and link it here).
