FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before your first class. Don’t see your question? Just ask!
Do I need to be in shape or flexible to start?
Not at all — that’s what class is for. Everyone starts as a white belt, and every exercise can be scaled. Many of our students started out unable to touch their toes.
What should I wear to my first class?
Comfortable workout clothes (sweatpants or athletic pants and a T-shirt) and a water bottle. We train barefoot on the mat. You won’t need a uniform until you’re getting ready for your first belt test.
How old do kids need to be?
Our classes are for ages 6 and up. Kids train in the same class as teens and adults, which is a big part of what makes it work: younger students learn from older ones, and parents can train right alongside their children.
Can parents train with their kids?
Yes — and we love it. Our family memberships make it affordable: $60/month for two family members, or $90/month for three to five.
Is there a contract?
No. Membership is month-to-month. Your first class is free, so you can see whether it’s a good fit before paying anything.
Is Taekwondo safe?
Safety comes first. Students learn to control their techniques, partner drills are supervised by black belts, and sparring uses protective gear. Free-sparring is introduced gradually as students progress.
I’m over 50. Am I too old?
No! Many of our black belts started in their 40s, 50s and beyond. You train at your own pace, and the flexibility, balance and strength you build pay off every day.
Where exactly are classes held?
At the Lakewood Link Recreation Center, 1295 S. Reed St., Lakewood, CO 80232. Check in at the front desk and they’ll point you to our room.
How do belt tests work?
When your instructor sees you’ve mastered the material for your next rank (and you’ve met the minimum time at your current rank), you’ll be invited to test. Testing is $20 per test.
What is Taekwondo?
Taekwondo is a traditional Korean martial art. The name means “the way of the hand and foot.” It is known for its powerful kicks, but students also learn hand techniques, blocks, forms, self-defense and a philosophy built on courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit.
How long does it take to earn a black belt?
Usually about three and a half years of regular training. There are nine colored-belt ranks between white belt and 1st Dan black belt, each with a minimum time requirement. See our Student Hub for the details.
Do you offer private lessons or self-defense seminars?
Self-defense seminars are available by request for groups. Contact us to talk about private lessons.
I trained in martial arts before. Can I join?
Of course! Returning and transferring students are welcome. Talk with your instructor about how your previous rank and experience fit in.
Your first class is free.
No contracts, no pressure, no experience needed. Wear comfortable clothes, bring water, and come meet us on the mat at the Lakewood Link.
